Nobel Prize winner in physics 2025 John Martinis in the quantum test bed

From Nobel Prize to quantum test bed

Behind the quantum test bed at Chalmers Next Labs lies world-leading research that was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2025. Here, corporate customers are given the opportunity to use the computing power of quantum algorithms to solve problems within their own operations.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis for groundbreaking experiments that laid the foundation for today's superconducting quantum computing. All of the laureates have had close and long-standing connections to Chalmers, where they have served as visiting researchers, faculty opponents, and participants in conferences at the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) – Sweden's national initiative in quantum technology, coordinated by Chalmers. In connection with the award ceremony in Stockholm, they all visited the quantum test bed.

The research that made quantum computers possible

The research that the Nobel Prize rewards—the demonstration of macroscopic quantum mechanical effects in superconducting electrical circuits—is the scientific basis on which today's quantum computers are built. At Chalmers, this knowledge has been developed and deepened over several decades, in close collaboration between international pioneers and leading quantum researchers worldwide. This has created unique expertise in quantum measurements, superconducting quantum bits, and scalable quantum systems.

From academic excellence to practical application

The result is not just academic breakthroughs. Since our last visit, Chalmers Next Labs has been established, with the mission of increasing the use of the university's world-leading research in industry and society. The lab is new to John Martinis, and he curiously inspects the test bed's quantum components.

So far, seven spin-off companies have been created within WACQT and have taken on a life of their own on the international market. However, the links to Chalmers remain strong, and several of the companies rent space in the quantum test bed to further develop their products.
