Sweden is investing in quantum technology: here's how Chalmers Next Labs is contributing
On August 18, 2026, the government presented a national strategy for quantum technology to strengthen Sweden’s position, competitiveness, and security in a field of technology that is expected to be of great importance to the industry and society of the future.
Among other things, the strategy highlights the need for strengthened research and infrastructure, industrial leadership, the supply of skilled labor, and better national coordination between research, innovation, and commercialization, as well as research and cybersecurity and international cooperation.
An important aspect is to create better conditions for translating research and technological development into innovation and commercial applications by strengthening the link between research and industry.
Among other things, the government aims to develop graduate schools, postdoctoral programs, and industry-based doctoral programs, as well as to facilitate international recruitment. The strategy also highlights the need to strengthen research and cybersecurity—including through the development of quantum-secure encryption—and to deepen international collaboration.
“Sweden currently holds a strong position in the field of quantum technology, but for us as a country to fully realize the potential in this area, we need, among other things, better links between research and industry, a stronger talent pipeline, and active participation in international collaborations related to quantum technology,” says Lotta Edholm, Minister for Upper Secondary Education, Higher Education, and Research.
What Is Quantum Technology?
Quantum technology is based on controlling very small particles, such as atoms and photons, and harnessing their unique properties to develop new technologies. Among other things, this technology can enable new types of computers, sensors, and communication systems and, in the long term, play a significant role in research, industry, and critical infrastructure.
From World-Leading Research to Practical Applications
– It is very gratifying that Sweden now has a strategy for quantum technology that lays the groundwork for long-term, coordinated national efforts. It gives us the opportunity to build onthe Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation’s long-term initiative through WACQT.
Through WACQT’s quantum technology testbed, Swedish companies and researchers gain access to cutting-edge expertise and advanced infrastructure in quantum technology. “Here, they can test real-world problems and algorithms, validate hardware and software, and explore concrete applications for quantum technology,” says Monica Ringvik, CEO of Chalmers Next Labs.
Chalmers Next Labs serves as a bridge between research and industry, making the latest research, cutting-edge expertise, and technical infrastructure in quantum technology available to Swedish industry and society.
